Among the many plants growing in my garden this year, I’m excited to spotlight nespole, also known as the loquat. This small, golden fruit is often overlooked in modern gardens but has a long history of deliciousness and resilience.
Nespole trees are hardy and thrive in warm climates, producing clusters of sweet, tangy fruits that ripen in late spring or early summer. Their flavor is a unique mix of citrus, mango, and peach—refreshing and perfect for fresh eating, jams, or desserts.
What makes nespole special is not just its taste but its hardiness and low-maintenance nature. It requires little care, tolerates drought well, and attracts beneficial pollinators to the garden. Despite these qualities, nespole has been largely forgotten in favor of more commercial fruits.
Growing nespole is a step toward preserving biodiversity and reconnecting with traditional, sustainable food sources. I encourage gardeners looking for something different and rewarding to give this forgotten fruit a place in their garden.
